BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the fifth time this season, University of Tennessee at Martin quarterback Keon Howard has been named an Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after leading the Skyhawks to a 42-3 victory over Tennessee Tech on Saturday.
On the season, Howard has claimed a total of seven OVC weekly honors – including five newcomer of the week and two offensive player of the week accolades. As a team, UT Martin has totaled 21 various honors.
A native of Laurel, Miss., Howard led an offense which posted 462 yards of total offense and scored 42 points en route to an OVC title clinching road victory. The graduate quarterback was highly efficient in the passing game in a contest which quickly got away, completing 14-of-19 pass attempts (73.6 percent) for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 10.1 yards per pass completion including touchdown connections of 62 and four yards, respectively. The dual-threat athlete also tallied 27 rushing yards while scampering for two first downs in three quarters of play.
Howard currently leads the OVC in completion percentage (59.7 percent), passing touchdowns (15) and points responsible for (150) on the season. He also ranks amongst league leaders in total offense (second), passing efficiency (second), yards per pass attempt (second), passing yards (third), rushing touchdowns (third), total touchdowns (third), scoring (fifth) and rushing yards (ninth).
