Union City Elementary School students paid tribute to their own while honoring all those who have served and continued to serve in the military as part of a Veteran’s Day celebration Thursday.

Several walls at UCES were decorated by students who were encouraged to bring photos of family members or friends of family to recognize their commitment to freedom. Each grade had its own “Wall of Honor” that included photos, branch of service, and current duty status (active or inactive).

Union City Schools were particularly happy to spotlight five members of its own family, including Director of Schools Wes Kennedy (U.S. Army), UCES custodian Nolin Sims (U.S. Marines Corps), UCES physical education teacher Nelson Youngblood (U.S. Air Force), UCMS educational aid Leah Dillon (U.S. Air Force), and UCHS custodian Johnny Tate (U.S. Army National Guard).

“First of all, we decided to do this so that our students had an opportunity to know and understand what it means to be a veteran and to learn about the veterans in their own families,” kindergarten teacher Jessica Graham said. “It’s really been neat to see our kids walk by and be proud of their very own veteran.

“As a faculty member, it’s been especially rewarding for me seeing our very own staff, including our favorite custodian, Mr. Nolin (Sims), be a part of this recognition. Knowing what he has done for us and continues to do for all of us every day has been a true blessing.

“We love our Mr. Nolin and all of our veteran staff members!”

Students at both UC Middle School and UCHS observed Veteran’s Day by watching a video commemorating the occasion and hearing of the day’s significance from principals Lance Morgan and Jacob Cross.
