KILLEN, Ala. – Senior Tate Chumley seized the individual lead early during today’s final round of the TVA Community Credit Union and didn’t let up, nabbing his first collegiate tournament victory for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad today.

Entering the day in second place by two shots, Chumley piled up six birdies on his way to a 68 today – winning the event by a whopping three strokes over Round 2 leader Caleb VanArragon from Valparaiso. Chumley’s 68 was two shots clear of the next best score in the 66-man field as he finished his tournament with a tally of 209 (-7). He ranked in the top-five in the field in par-3 scoring (2.75, -3, first), birdies (13, second), par-4 scoring (3.97, -1, third) and par-5 scoring (4.75, -3) while adding a team-high 35 pars.

“I couldn’t be happier for Tate,” Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. “He’s our captain and has worked his tail off the last four years. He has become one of our leaders on and off the course – this was a special day for him and our program.”

As a team, UT Martin carded a 295 today to finish third in the 11-team field with an overall score of 882 (+18), ranking only behind host North Alabama (867, +3) and Valparaiso (875, +11). The Skyhawks topped the 54-hole event in par-3 scoring (3.13, +8) while ranking second in birdies (41) and par-4 scoring (4.14, +21).

“I am proud of our efforts this week,” Swafford said. “We have to improve mentally when we get tested on the course but overall, the guys fought hard.”

Ranking behind Chumley today was his brother Garrett Chumley as he shot 2-under over his final 13 holes on the way to a 73. Jonathan Xoinis and Bryson Morrell were each sitting at 1-over through 11 holes today before finishing with a 76 and 78, respectively. Jacob Uehlein was the fifth member of UT Martin’s scoring lineup as he was 1-over after 10 holes before tallying a 79.

Competing as an individual, freshman Cayden Chambers excelled with a score of 72 today, rolling in four birdies on his Round 3 scorecard.

Overall, Uehlein and Chambers tied for 16th place with 223’s (+7) – marking the second straight top-20 finish for Uehlein and the best collegiate performance of Chambers’ young Skyhawk career.

Garrett Chumley finished 23rd with a 225 (+9) while Morrell and Xoinis tied for 39th place with a 231 (+15).

UT Martin closes out its fall schedule next week when it competes in the Battle at Black Creek, hosted by Chattanooga on Oct. 25-26.
