MOREHEAD, Ky. – For the second straight day, the University of Tennessee at Martin could not generate momentum in a 3-0 setback (17-25, 18-25, 20-25) at Morehead State in Ohio Valley Conference volleyball action Saturday morning.

The Skyhawks were guided defensively today by Kayla Carrell (10 digs) and Olivia Saunders (five blocks). Karen Scanlon slammed down a team-high six kills to go along with nine digs while Haeleigh Paulino posted a team-best 10 assists and seven digs. Dylan Mott also scooped up eight digs for UT Martin, who is now 10-13 overall with a 6-4 mark in OVC play.

Paulino had a service ace to start the day as the Skyhawks began the match on a 3-0 run. UT Martin later unreeled four straight points – capped off by a Baillie Kearns service ace – to go ahead by a 10-7 margin but the Eagles (11-9, 7-2 OVC) scored six unanswered points during a 10-1 surge. Francela Ulate, Wallick and Addison Conley added kills for the Skyhawks during the latter stages of the first set but UT Martin would not get any closer than four points. Saunders swatted away three blocks for the Skyhawks in the opening set.

Saunders and Jessica Reynolds helped UT Martin get off to a good start in the second set, each posting a kill and a block assist as part of the Skyhawks’ first four points. Morehead State scored six straight points as part of a 10-2 run. Kambree Lucas, Scanlon and Ulate each pitched in kills during a 4-0 run which pulled UT Martin back within five points late but the deficit was ultimately too large to overcome. Saunders accounted for four kills in six attempts as the Skyhawks hit .273 with 14 kills in the second stanza.

In the third set, Scanlon had a kill and service ace during UT Martin’s first four points. After a 5-0 run by the Eagles, Scanlon tacked on two more kills as the Skyhawks kept chipping away to get within striking distance at 16-12. Following a UT Martin timeout, a Reynolds kill finished off a 4-0 Skyhawk run to make the score 21-18 but Morehead State tallied three straight points and UT Martin would not get any closer than four points the rest of the way. Mott generated a match-high five digs in the third set to top the Skyhawks.

UT Martin continues its four-match road trip next weekend when it travels to SIUE on Oct. 22-23.
