Memphis, Tenn.–Two native Henry Countians were in the forefront of the team that landed the largest manufacturing investment in the history of the Ford Motor Company and the largest manufacturing investment in the State of Tennessee.

And it’s happening right here in West Tennessee.

Kudos to both Kyle Spurgeon, President/CEO for the Jackson Chamber of Commerce and Mark Herbison, President/CEO for HTL Advantage, who were instrumental in acquiring the project.

The Ford Motor Company has selected the Memphis Regional Megasite for one of the largest battery and vehicle manufacturing campuses in the U.S. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and leaders including Herbison and Spurgeon joined executives from Ford Motor Company and SK Innovation in Memphis on Tuesday, to share details about the multi-year project. Governor Lee will be returning to Memphis Wednesday afternoon for a Megasite Authority meeting.

On his Facebook page, Spurgeon talks of the project and the family connections it involves for him, noting that his father was a long-time salesman and finance manager for Joe Mahan Ford in Paris.

Spurgeon said, “I am honored to have been part of the team that has landed the largest manufacturing investment in the history of Ford Motor Company and also the largest manufacturing investment in the State of Tennessee’s history. To be a part of a transformational project is great, and the family connection makes it even better.”

Spurgeon’s father, Paul Spurgeon, worked for Joe Mahan Ford from 1976 until he passed away in 2006.
And the connections don’t end there.
Spurgeon and Herbison grew up together in Paris and roomed together at Murray State. Spurgeon noted that his Dad sold Herbison his first truck. “You can’t make up this stuff,” he said.
Without Herbison leading the local effort in Haywood/Tipton/Lauderdale Counties, Spurgeon told RadioNWTN, “this project would not have happened.”
Spurgeon recalled, “Two weeks ago I was going through some old boxes at my mom’s house and ran across this lapel pin. The pin is one my dad wore during his time with Ford. Because we had worked with the Ford team, I knew Blue Oval would play a significant role in the branding of the new facility. It is an understatement to say I got chill bumps when I found the pin.
“Today, I wore the pin to the Ford/SK Innovation announcement at Shelby Farms in Memphis. My dad passed away sixteen years ago, but I think he is looking down feeling very proud that he was well represented at today’s event.,” Spurgeon said.

In his comments Tuesday, Governor Lee said,  “West Tennessee is primed to deliver the workforce and quality of life needed to create the next great American success story with Ford Motor Company and SK Innovation. This is a watershed moment for Tennesseans as we lead the future of the automotive industry and advanced manufacturing.”
