Union City, Tenn.–Union City’s Middle School softball season came to a close with a 5-2 loss to Crockett County in the semifinals of the district tournament Saturday in Milan.

The Lady Tornadoes, who’d earlier in the tourney beaten Dyersburg 12-4 to advance to the Final 4, finished their season with a 15-7 record.

Sarah Beth Byars, Addison Carr and Mattie Smith were all named to the all-district team from UC following Saturday’s event.

Carr and Smith both homered in the Twisters’ big over D’burg in Saturday’s opening quarterfinal victory.

Smith’s clout was a grand slam and part of a five-RBI performance. Carr went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Clare Atwill and Madie Theobald both had two hits and Gracie Sims doubled in UC’s 12-hit attack. Atwill and Breanna McLendon each scored twice to back the three-hit pitching of Smith, who went the distance to pick up the circle victory.

Union City answered Dyersburg’s two-run first with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning, then tacked on four more runs in the second.

Theobald and Emma Mobbs knocked in Atwill and Carr in the opening frame of the semifinal matchup against CC, but the Lady Cavaliers tied the game after three. A three-run Crockett County fourth ended the Lady Tornadoes’ campaign.

Smith tripled while both McLendon and Atwill singled for UC’s lone hits in the contest.

Carr was charged with the pitching loss, despite giving up just two hits.

Seven 8-graders played their final game in a UCMS uniform, including Atwill, Carr, Smith, Byars, Sims, McLendon and Theobald.
