
Union City, Tenn.–With the pending retirement of long-time Police Chief Perry Barfield, the city of Union City is accepting applications for police chief.
Barfield was named Police Chief in 2012, before which he was assistant chief for several years. He has been with the Police Department for almost 40 years. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice. He began his law enforcement career with the Martin Police Department and was there about two years before joining the Union City police force.
Barfield said he will assist in the transition to the new Police Chief.
Applications are being accepted now through the close of business October 1 and interviews for the position are set for the last part of October.
Applications will not be accepted after October 1, 2021. Testing and interviews will be conducted October 27-28, 2021, in Union City. Details will be sent to applicants selected to interview. Minimum requirements include: Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university preferably with major in criminal justice, police science or related field Certification of training for police administration or ability to obtain in the first year required. At least 10 years of progressive law enforcement experience with at least 5 years of experience in police administration and/or experience as a commanding officer i.e., Lieutenant, Captain. Must pass extensive background check. Must possess Tennessee P.O.S.T. certification or be eligible for transition as described in Tennessee P.O.S.T. rules. Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License or obtain within 30 days of hire.
