Union City, Tenn.–Both the Union City High School golf and volleyball teams were winners in their 2021 season debuts.

The Tornado linksters beat host Obion Central and Huntingdon in a three-way boys’ match, while the UC girls claimed a five-stroke win over Huntingdon on the girls’ side.

Kaigan Davis served up 11 aces, and Sara Ullrich had nine digs and seven aces to lead the Lady Tornadoes to a 3-0 sweep of Lake County Monday in UC’s volleyball opener.

The UC Middle School softball team made it a perfect day with a 15-4 rout of Martin.

Today’s fall sports schedule has Union City opening its middle school football schedule with a trip to Trenton. The Tornado softball crew hosts Black Oak, and the UCMS cross country teams will compete at Dresden.

Highlights from Monday’s contests are as follows:

Both Landon Hauhe and Nolan Chandler shot 41s for UC. Carter Watts finished with a 52 and Cameron Thompson carded a 55.

Union City shot a 174 as a team to easily outdistance Huntingdon (232) and OC, which had just three players play.

Union City’s next match is next Monday at the Weakley County Country Club.

VOLLEYBALL

UC girls make Graham a winner

Jessica Graham began her second tenure as the Lady Tornado head coach with a 25-11, 25-17 and 25-6 victory over homestanding Lake County.

Graham earlier spent three seasons on the Union City sidelines, leading the young program to its first-ever state tournament berth.

In addition to Davis and Ullrich Monday, Anna Cheatham had seven aces and five kills, while Emma Powell was good for five aces and four assists. Annie Wade came up with five digs and three aces.

“I was very proud of our serving for this match,” Graham said, after her squad recorded 40 aces in all as a team. “The girls pushed their way through the first match nerves and finally dominated in the third game and played to their full potential.

“This is a great group of girls, full of so much volleyball talent. I am very excited to see everything this season has in store for them.”

Union City will visit West Carroll on Wednesday.
