Paris, Tenn.–At the outset of Monday night’s county commission meeting, Henry County Mayor John Penn Ridgeway read Governor Bill Lee’s Executive Order which gives parents the ability to opt their children out of local school board or health department mask mandates.
Governor Lee’s Executive Order No. 84 was issued Monday afternoon and Ridgeway distributed copies of the order to commission members, as well as members of the audience.
Some 20-25 people were on hand for Monday’s meeting, but none spoke during the public comment segment of the meeting.
Ridgeway addressed the vacancy on the Henry County School board, left vacant by the resignation of Junior Staggs. He said the county commission will be voting on the new board member at the September commission meeting.
Anyone interested in the position will be expected to present a resume and present a statement of interest. Candidates will be asked to give a five-minute speech at the September meeting, after which commissioners will vote.
Former County School Board Member Rod Frey announced at the meeting his intention of applying for the position and appearing at the September meeting.
Ridgeway said anyone who has questions about the process or being a member of the county school board can call either himself or County Director of Schools Dr. Leah Watkins.
In other business, Sheriff Josh Frey presented an update on the inmate work release program.
