Last night around 12:30 a.m., DPD responded to Curry Street in reference to a weapons complaint. Officers arrived to be met by a female running away from the residence, yelling that “he” was inside and was going to shoot her. The suspect, identified as Jaden Wilburn, 19, Hayti, MO., opened the door to the residence then quickly closed it. Officers secured the victim in a patrol car, while a second individual exited the residence and was secured. While attempting to make contact with Wilburn, he exited the residence refusing to comply with the officer’s commands. Officers observed what they believed to be a handgun in Wilburn’s front pocket and held him at gunpoint. Officers utilizing less lethal options and verbal commands attempted to place him into custody. Wilburn resisted the officer’s attempt saying he was not going to jail, it was legal, and he had done nothing wrong, referring to Tennessee’s new Permitless Carry Law that went into effect July 1.
Officers were able to place Wilburn into custody and retrieved a loaded handgun from his front pocket. The investigation determined that Wilburn arrived at his girlfriend’s residence, where she was asleep with her child. Wilburn began to argue with the victim, and she asked him to leave. Wilburn is alleged to have placed a handgun against the victim’s head. The victim was able to flee from the residence calling 911.
Wilburn was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, possession of a handgun while intoxicated, and interference with an emergency call. Wilburn was jailed pending Dyersburg City Court action today.
