Paris, Tenn.–Weather was perfect and a large crowd was on hand for Monday morning’s Memorial Day Service at the Henry County Courthouse.

Major Susan Parker of the U.S. Army Combat Engineers encouraged everyone to remember the real importance of Memorial Day weekend. Major Parker was the first female commander of the 212th Engineer Co., headquartered in Paris. She received a Bronze Star, participated in three overseas deployments, including with Operation Iraqi Freedom, and worked for the Henry County School system, primarily at Lakewood School.

Major Parker reminded everyone that Memorial Day may mark the end of the school year and beginning of summer, but more importantly, it is a solemn remembrance of those of who sacrificed everything for their country.

She told everyone the story of Sgt. James “Dusty” Carroll of McKenzie, who died at the age of 23 in 2005 in Baghdad. She also related the story of a friend of Carroll’s, who had served with him and suffered PTSD after his death. A Nashville songwriter Jeremy Bucy wrote a song, “I Owe You That” about their experiences and Major Parker played a recording of the song.

She reminded everyone that the blessings of BBQs and other activities on Memorial Day Weekend are due to the sacrifices of soldiers.

Edith Gardner sang acapella versions of patriotic songs, with Ronnie Norwood of VFW Post 89 serving as emcee. Pastor Mike Robertson provided the opening and closing prayers, and Ed Smith played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes. Commanders and representatives of the local veterans’ organizations were introduced, along with Henry County Service Officer Jon Bolding.

Along with Andrew Paschall of Puryear and his horse-drawn carriage pulled by his team of Doc and Dan, the Tennessee State Guard performed a mock military funeral.
