Union City, Tenn.–Union City High School Art Club students got an up-close and personal look at the works of one of the most-famous artists in history recently.
Two dozen students traveled with club sponsor and UCHS art teacher Hilary Webb to downtown Nashville for a viewing of Pablo Picasso’s popular Picasso: Figures at the Frist Museum of Art.
The Nashville stop was the only city in the United States chosen to display the exclusive touring exhibition.
The sold-out exhibition has drawn a world-wide audience and elicited rave reviews from the Union City High School contingent.
Webb claimed she was “thrilled with the students’ enthusiasm and interest in the exhibit.
“They really took the opportunity to learn about Picasso and appreciate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said.
The exhibition offers an in-depth look at Picasso’s career-long fascination with the human figure as a means of expressing a range of subjects and emotions. Approximately 75 paintings, works on paper and sculptures made up the display.
In addition to the Picasso exhibit, UCHS students also viewed two other displays at the Frist: Creating the American West in Art, and Liliana Porter: Man with Axe and Other Stories.
The group, which was also accompanied by UCHS English teacher Joanna Wisener on the trip, then further explored downtown Nashville where they tasted cuisine from around the world and also shopped for homemade goods, crafts and specialty foods at the Nashville Farmer’s Market.
