High Winds Couldn’t Blow UC Sports Off Course

uc-track

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–High winds Tuesday couldn’t blow most Union City spring sports teams off course.

Wins in both high school and middle school baseball, two more dominant performances in track and another blowout victory in soccer highlighted a full slate of competitions that beat the drastic weather changes.

The UCHS tennis teams were also a part of that victory parade, each winning twice in runaway fashion.

The following is a recap of Tuesday’s results:

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Tornado teams impressive once more

Union City made it three meet wins in four outings this spring, taking honors in its own 11-team UC Open that was halted by inclement weather in the evening with four events remaining.

The Lady Tornadoes easily outdistanced their closest competitors with 94 points. Jackson South Side was a distant second with 41.

The UC boys totaled 90 points to finish way in front. Huntingdon (63) was runner-up.

Union City’s girls got first-place efforts from Kyle McCadney (400 meters, triple jump), Chloe Meade (800), Megan Burney (discus) and Destiny Kenton (shot put).

Kia German was second in the discus, while Jermyia Bonds placed No. 2 in the shot. Bailey Waggoner was runner-up in the 1600, and Chanyah Liphford had the same finish in the 100.

Ada Rogers placed second in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

Strong performances in the relays propelled the Twister boys.

The team of Skyler Mayes, Matthew Parr, Kameron Shade and Durrell Littleton won the 4×200. A group made up of BJ Frankum, Cedrion Cook, Parr and Ben Martinek crossed the finish line first in the 4×800.

Mayes, Jacob Arnold, Kweli Purifoy and Shade combined to place second in the 4×100.

Cook posted a runner-up showing in the 1600, Parr was second in the triple jump and Taylan Tribble placed second in the discus. Carter Bondurant came in second in the shot.

“Our kids really made the best out of the bad weather day,” UC head coach Wade Maddox said. “They ignored the elements and competed, which is all you can ask of them.”

Union City will travel to Murray for the Calloway County Invitational next Tuesday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 15, Greenfield 5

A wild 10-run top of the seventh by the Golden Tornadoes broke a 5-all deadlock and sent Union City to a sweep of the two-game District 13A series.

UC (11-10-1, 8-1) benefitted greatly from a rash of G’field errors in that fateful frame. In all, the ‘Jackets were guilty of 10 errors in the contest.

Mason Reed had a big day at the plate and on the mound for the Tornadoes. He went 4-for-5 with a triple, double and two RBI batting-wise, and also picked up the pitching win with a six-inning effort that saw him strike out 10 Greenfield hitters to improve to 5-2.

Gunnar Cheatham also tripled and doubled and had pair of ribbies as part of a 3-for-5 day.  Union City had 13 hits all totaled.

Gannon Searcy scored three times and Kyler Southerland crossed the plate twice.

The Twisters have a make-up game scheduled for Thursday at Lake County before hosting Madison Academic Friday for Senior Night.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 7, TCA 4

The Tornadoes completed a two-game sweep of Trinity Christian Academy, winning on the road in Jackson.

Winning pitcher Ben Kail, who gave up just one earned run in four innings, also reached base four times via two hits and a pair of walks. Tucker Davis tripled and scored in a 2-for-3 performance, while Copeland Chism had a three-base hit and drove in a run.

Chism pitched the final two innings to get credit for a save.

Now 13-9, UCMS will celebrate 8th Grade Night Thursday by hosting Jackson Christian School.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

UC 9, Ripley 0

The Tornadoes continued their recent hot streak, winning their fourth straight – all in convincing fashion.

UC (6-2) beat Ripley by an identical score on Friday.

Isaac Mack posted a hat trick and added an assist to his three-goal effort to pace the Twisters. Both Logan Elmore and Joseph Lattus found the net twice, while Miguel Sanchez had a goal and an assist.

Riley Caudill aided on a pair of scoring plays, while Dallas Horton had a goal and an assist for Union City, which led 6-0 at the intermission.

The Twisters scored on nine of their 14 shots on goal and did not allow a single Ripley shot on goal.

Union City begins a tough four-match stretch to end the season on Thursday when it hosts Obion Central at 5 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

UC 7-6, GC 0-0 (G)

UC 5-5, GC 2-1

The Tornado teams continue to rack up wins against local opponents, winning twice in both girls’ and boys’ play in what was essentially a doubleheader against Gibson County after an earlier match was rained out.

Matches were modified to save time, but the two victories gave the Union City girls the regular season district team championship.

The Lady Tornadoes again showcased their impressive depth, sitting their Top 6 seeds, but still dominating in all matches.

The Tornado programs will play at Huntingdon on Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Westview 9-8, UC 2-3

Errors and misplays haunted the Lady Tornadoes in both ends of a doubleheader loss to Martin.

Of the 17 runs the Chargers scored in the two games combined, only one was earned.

In the opener, UC got just three hits – two of those coming from Bayleigh Long. Sophie Theobald had the other, a triple, and knocked in a run.

The Twisters were guilty of six errors.

Anna Lynn Cheatham did not give up a single earned run yet was tagged with the pitching loss. She surrendered six hits and struck out three.

The theme was the same in Game 2 as just one of eight runs charged to Theobald was earned.

Emmaline Qualls went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Marlee Theobald had a RBI.

Union City (10-8) will host Gibson County Friday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER

McKenzie 5, UC 2

Drake Chism and Marcos Landeros accounted for Union City’s goals, but the Tornadoes missed on several other chances for scores to fall to 3-4-1.

Gracie Worrell was credited with a half-dozen stops on defense, while Nolan Tucker recorded six saves in goal for UC.

The Twisters will host South Gibson County Friday at 5:30 p.m.
