Senior Night A Success For UCHS Softball

uchs-softball-1-april-15-2021

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Senior Night went according to plan for the Union City High School softball team.

After honoring Kaitlyn Lamb and Avery Decker in pregame ceremonies, the Lady Tornadoes hammered visiting Gleason 14-0 at Eddlemon-Hawks Field Thursday evening.

UC improved to 7-0 in District 13A play and 9-5 overall with its second rout in as many meetings against the Lady Bulldogs this year.

Lamb doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs as part of a 14-hit attack. Decker, meanwhile, – sidelined since early in the season with a wrist injury – took the field for the first pitch still sporting a cast before being replaced in a nice gesture by head coach J.B. Suiter.

Anna Lynn Cheatham launched a solo home run over the centerfield fence while Sophie Theobald circled the bases on a three-run inside-the-park roundtripper as UC sent 16 batters to the plate in an 11-run second inning.

Marlee Theobald doubled, singled twice and scored twice, and Bayleigh Long had three hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Sophie Theobald struck out 11 and gave up just three singles to win her fourth league game in as many starts.

Union City is set to host South Fulton Friday at 5 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

UC 10, SF 1

Brian Arellano recorded a hat trick and both Joseph Lattus and Miguel Sanchez scored twice to help the Tornadoes beat South Fulton convincingly for the second time in as many matches this spring.

Isaac Mack, Hogan Kern and Juan Lopez also found the net for the Purple and Gold, which improved to 4-2.

In all, Union City scored 10 times via 15 shots on goal and led 6-0 at the intermission.

Kern and Riley Caudill were credited with two assists apiece, while Mack, Arellano and Sanchez also aided in scoring plays for the victors.

The Twisters are at home Friday at 5:30 p.m. to face Ripley.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Martin 2-3, UC 0-4

The Tornadoes salvaged a doubleheader split with Martin, scoring the deciding run via an error in the final inning of Game 2.

Logan Dawkins ended the nightcap by striking out a Martin hitter with the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Dawkins got credit for the save for winning pitcher Copeland Chism, who struck out four and allowed two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Dawkins helped himself at the dish with a pair of doubles, a run scored and another knocked in. Jack Harris also had a hit and a RBI, as did Ben Kail.

Kail was the hard-luck loser hurler in Game 1, despite not allowing an earned run. He gave up just three hits.

UC could manage but two safeties, though, Dawkins and Finn Frankum collecting those.

Now 11-9, the Tornadoes host Trinity Christian Academy on Monday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER

Paris Inman 2, UC 2 (PI wins in sudden death)

Tied at the end of regulation, Union City fell when the host Bulldogs scored in sudden death.

Gavin Morgan and Marcos Landeros accounted for the Tornado goals.

Nolan Tucker turned in another stellar performance in goal for UC, while Juan Carlos Barron, Jordan Lofton and Carter Wilson all had exceptional efforts in the field for the Twisters.

Union City is now 2-3-1 heading into Monday’s 5:30 p.m. match against visiting Obion County.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Peabody 2, UC 0

The Tornadoes fell to Trenton Peabody for the second straight day and third time this season, despite a solid pitching outing by Landon Hauhe.

Hauhe went the distance, striking out five and allowing just one earned run and seven singles. He threw 102 pitches and walked just one Tide hitter.

Union City (8-10) could not break through against the Peabody tandem of Daylan Russell and Sid Hammonds who combined to fan a half-dozen Twister hitters.

Gunnar Cheatham and Dalton Bone both had a pair of singles for the Tornadoes. Hauhe recorded the game’s lone extra-base hit – a double.

UC will welcome visiting Hickman County (Ky.) Friday night at 7.
