Henry County Schools Board Approves Easements For City Sidewalk Project

Paris, Tenn.–At its March meeting Thursday evening, the Henry County Schools board of education approved easements allowing the city of Paris’ sidewalk project to move forward and honored Spelling Bee winners.

Upon recommendation of Director of Schools Dr. Leah Watkins, the board granted easements for the city project which will install sidewalks along Wilson Street in front of Rhea Elementary past the high school and over to Lankford Rd. The board also designated a section of S. Wilson St. as a public road to allow sidewalk access there.

Spelling Bee winners were honored:

1st Place- 6th Grader from Harrelson School Robert Butler

2nd Place- 6th Graders from Lakewood Middle School Annie Grace Snow
3rd Place- 4th Grader from Harrelson School Jace Dunn
Due to continuing limitations on meeting attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the winners were not present at the meeting. Even though the students could not be present, Dr. Watkins said, “We want to celebrate these students, for sure.”

Judges of the Spelling Bee were: Board Member Stan Dunagan, Judge Vicki Snyder, Henry County Commissioner Rev. James Travis and HCHS Principal Michele Webb.

In other business:

–Board Member Stan Dunagan presented an update for the scholarship committee. The committee held its first meeting March 3 and decided the focus of the project will be on students who want to become teachers and work in Henry County. Board Member Tom Beasley also is a member of the committee.

–The board also approved the school calendar for the 2021-2020 school year. First day of school will be August 2, with the last day of school May 20. Fall break will be October 11-15; Thanksgiving break is November 24-26 and Christmas break will start December 20. HCHS graduation is set for May 13.
