There is a new plan for the District 13A Basketball Tournament.

Due to wintery weather that postponed the original start dates at the beginning of the week, and, with more such conditions in the forecast, the tourney brackets for both girls’ and boys’ teams have been totally overhauled.

The updated version has both girls’ and boys’ play beginning Monday, Feb. 22. All games will still be played at the higher seed with the quarterfinals set for Monday, the semifinals Tuesday (Feb. 23) and championship and consolation rounds scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 24.

In the event a girls’ team and boys’ team from the same school are slated to host a game on the same night, the gymnasium will be cleared – per TSSAA rules – between two sessions that will begin at 5 and 7:45, p.m., respectively.

That will come into play immediately for both top-seeded Union City teams.

The Lady Tornadoes will host the winner of the Bradford-South Fulton quarterfinal game on Tuesday at 5. Marty Sisco Gymnasium will then be cleared of all fans before the UC boys play the survivor of the Greenfield-Dresden game at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

That will be the case in the quarterfinals as well as both Greenfield teams and both Bradford squads will play at home with staggered start times and the emptying of gymnasiums between games.

Tickets for Union City’s two games will be sold in advance on both Monday and Tuesday at UCHS and fans must purchase two tickets to stay for both sessions. Tickets will cost $6 each and will be available from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Monday, and from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., on Tuesday.

Though there will still be limited attendance due to coronavirus protocols put in place by the TSSAA, Union City School officials will make around 350 tickets available to Tornado fans during those aforementioned times. Opposing schools will be given 100 tickets.

There will be no tickets sold at the gate on game nights. TSSAA and TACA passes will be honored.

UC’s two entries will play again at home on Wednesday in either the championship or consolation round of both the girls’ and boys’ tournaments. Times of those games will not be determined until after the semifinals are completed.
