Just like the Union City boys, the Tornado girls are the No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 13A Basketball Tournament.
UC was awarded the regular season league championship by virtue of a combination of a COVID victory over Lake County and after winning a coin toss with Greenfield when the two ended up tied for the district title with identical 10-2 13A records.
Tonight’s Union City at Lake County make-up game was cancelled earlier today.
Brackets for the upcoming postseason have now been officially set — though the real possibility for changes due to an inclement winter weather forecast exists.
Both Tornado teams will enjoy homecourt advantages throughout the district event this year, in a change from the traditional set-up due to limited attendance allowed at games.
At least for now, the Union City girls are scheduled to play next Thursday (Feb. 18) and the Tornado boys next Friday (Feb. 19).
Attendance will still be limited at games, and ticket information will come from each host school in the days prior to their games. Visiting schools will be allotted 100 tickets, and all tickets will be sold in advance.
The Lady Tornadoes gained a win over LC after their game — postponed initially after the Lady Falcons were forced to quarantine in December, then twice this week due to inclement weather — was ultimately designated as a Union City win due to COVID guidelines established by the district coaches.
That decision mandated that a team that was healthy when the originally-scheduled game was postponed receive essentially a forfeit win.
UC, thus, not only was designated as regular season district champions, but also earned a bye into the 13A semifinals, homecourt advantage throughout the tourney and an automatic spot in the regionals.
