Acting Legend Hal Holbrook has died at the age of 95.

Holbrook is well-known in the local area and lived part-time in McLemoresville in Carroll County with his late wife, the actress Dixie Carter. After Carter’s death, Holbrook continued living in McLemoresville part-time.

The Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center in Huntingdon is named for Carter and mementores of the careers of both Carter and Holbrook are on display there.

The Hal Holbrook Theatre is located in The Dixie and Holbrook appeared there several times, performing his famous “Mark Twain Tonight”. His last performance there in 2014 was attended by former Tennessee Governor Donald Sundquist, two State Supreme Court justices, state representatives, and other dignitaries.

A tribute to Holbrook was posted this morning on The Dixie’s Facebook page: “Mr. Holbrook, along with Dixie, poured their love into our venue. In the early 2000’s, as The Dixie came to fruition, Hal spent countless hours with our team as an invaluable consultant in designing the theatre with no detail overlooked – from the lighting and sound to the performance dressing rooms that reside just a few steps away from the stage. Since 2005, The Hal Holbrook Theater has held hundreds of performances, including many Mark Twain Tonight! shows by Hal Holbrook himself.”
The tribute concludes, “Today we say goodbye to our dear friend, Mr. Hal Holbrook. We will be forever grateful for his dedication to his craft, and especially grateful for his time spent with us, for it is through his support and love, The Dixie is what it is today.”

Holbrook was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Deep Throat in “All The President’s Men”, and appeared in numerous movies and television shows during his lengthy and distinguished career. He won five Emmy Awards, a Tony and numerous other awards.

His assistant told the New York Times that Holbrook died on 23 January.
