UCHS football banquet honors team, standouts

Members of the 2020 Union City High School football team were honored at a banquet that signaled the official ending of head coach Nick Markle’s first season at the helm.

All 42 players in the program were recognized, along with assistant coaches and support personnel after the group enjoyed a meal in the Commons Area of the school.

Markle specifically recognized the Tornadoes who made the All-Region 7-2A team in his comments.

Among those were:

(From left) Miguel Sanchez, Hayden Kennedy, Travon Westbrook, Neil Brown, Carter Bondurant, Wes Tilghman and Gage Smith.

Brown was chosen by a vote of league coaches as the Best Lineman in the region, while Tilghman was honored as 7-2A’s Best Offensive Player. Tilghman was also noted for being selected to the West Tennessee All Star Game, though that contest was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

UC finished the 2020 season with a 6-5 record, making it to the second round of the state playoffs.

UCMS boys nip Three Oaks; Lady Tornadoes drop opener

Harris hit four 3-pointers — three in the first half — in the contest, which was close throughout. UC led 14-9 after one, trailed 28-27 at the intermission and then went back in front 40-36 after three periods.

Davis Hayes and Deangelo Monroe had 10 points apiece for the Purple and Gold, which improved to 9-2 with the victory.

The Lady Twisters lost Game 1, 41-10.

Clair Atwill had eight points for Union City, which trailed 12-2 after one and 25-4 at halftime.

The UC girls are now 2-9 heading into the holiday break.
