Union City, Tenn.–Fourth-grade social studies students at Union City Elementary School put their own personal family touch on a recent class project.

Completing a study on the Middle Ages as part of the CKLA curriculum, students of Chelsea Cupp and Ashleigh Roberson were assigned to design their own Coat of Arms from the many things they learned in the lesson.

From shapes of shields and the lines on them to colors and animals featured, students went into great detail putting together images of their family traditions and traits, lineage and beliefs.

“From looking at their illustrations, you could tell they paid attention to our study,” Cupp said of their students. “They really put a lot of thought and effort into their own personal Coat of Arms designs and they did a good job of explaining those when they presented them to the rest of the class.

“The discussions we had as a group were enlightening and I believe the kids really enjoyed that part as well.”

For her part, Roberson echoed much of what her teaching partner said.

“It was been such a fun project and we have had a great response,” Roberson claimed. “Each child has been so enthusiastic about designing their own Coat of Arms and getting to present it to the class.

“Presenting seemed so scary to many of them at first, but it has been so neat to watch each child develop some confidence through speaking in front of their classmates. This is always one of my favorite projects to do.”
