Seniors Erin Gill and Carter Walton have been named as Union City High School’s representatives in the annual Heisman High School Scholarship program.

In its 26th year, the high school Heisman program honors seniors across the country who accomplish tremendous feats in the classroom, on the fields and, most importantly, within their communities.

Applicants were required to have at least a 3.0 grade point average and have participated in a sport in addition to being involved in volunteer service, community involvement or leadership in the school and community.

Gill is a member of the Lady Tornado tennis team and the captain of the band color guard, while also being involved in numerous church, school and community activities.

She has been a recipient of the Kiwanis Student of the Month, a student ambassador, involved in Tornado Pride and has regularly made the honor roll.

Gill plans to attend Murray (Ky.) State University and major in business administration.

Walton recently competed in the state golf tournament and also plays basketball and baseball for the Purple and Gold. He ranks in the Top 10 in his class and is a member of the school’s magnet program.

Additionally, he has participated in the annual Obion County Hometown Walk of Hope while also being involved in community work at the Obion County Nursing Home.

Walton’s future plans include attending Mississippi State University and majoring in PGA golf course management.

The Heisman High School Scholarship is presented by Acceptance Insurance. From its inception, the program has leveraged the reputation of the Heisman Memorial Trophy as a symbol of great ability combined with diligence, perseverance and hard work.

Over the last 26 years, the program has honored more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors and provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarships to students and more than a million dollars to high school academic and athletic programs across the country.

Winners on the state level in the program will advance to the nationals and receive financial rewards.
