Many Homecoming Activities Cancelled At UC Schools Due To Covid-19

Union City, Tenn.–Unfortunately, COVID-19 has affected this year’s Union City High School homecoming festivities.

While a queen will be crowned during halftime ceremonies of Friday’s game between the Golden Tornadoes and Jackson South Side, there will be no other traditional school-sponsored activities that are synonymous with the annual occasion due to social distancing guidelines and regulations.

That means no UCHS-sanctioned homecoming parade, pep rally or after-the-game dance.

The customary homecoming court will be recognized, however.

Samantha George, Layken Prather and Kimaria Jackson will make up the senior portion of the court. A representative of the junior, sophomore and freshman classes will also be announced at intermission of the contest.

Union City will be looking for its fourth straight victory in the game against the Class 4A Hawks, who’ll come in with a 1-2 record. South Side and all Madison County public schools had their first two games of the season canceled, due to COVID-19.

As has been the case all season, fans will have their temperatures taken upon entering War Memorial Stadium and everyone who enters must have a mask for admittance.

The Tornadoes improved to 2-0 in Region 7-2A play last week with a 21-14 win over Gibson County when James Burcham intercepted a Pioneer pass in the endzone with just four seconds to play to secure the victory.

Friday’s game begins a tough stretch of the schedule for the Purple and Gold, which will face two-time reigning state champion Peabody next week, to be followed by Class 4A Dyersburg and once-beaten regional rival McKenzie in the ensuing three weeks.
