uc-vb

The ‘Comeback Kids’ were at it again Tuesday.

For the second time in as many nights, the Union City High School volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win a five-set thriller, beating visiting Peabody 19-17 in the final game.

The Lady Tornadoes improved to 12-2 overall heading into next Monday’s home match with Halls, where the regular season district title will be at stake.

UC squared its match with Trenton after winning Game 2, 25-12, Tuesday, before the Lady Tide took Game 3, 25-17.

The Twister girls then claimed Game 4 (25-17) to force a fifth and deciding game that they won in razor-close fashion.

Anna Lynn Cheatham and Abby Suiter both rang up 30 kills to lead the Union City attack. Kaigan Davis recorded 29 and Marlee Johnson contributed 21.

Johnson’s service game was strong as she accounted for a team-best 26 points. Suiter was good for 20 service points, while Raegan Taylor was responsible for 18.

The UC jayvee team was also victorious, winning a three-setter (25-14, 24-26, 15-7).

Lainey Barker had 14 service points, Mary Morgan Hale added 13 and both Bayleigh Long and Naryah Avent each finished with 11 for the Lady Tornadoes. Long also was good for nine kills.

Emma Parks, Morgan Palmer and Avent were credited for solid defense.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Hillcrest 7, UC 5

The Lady Tornadoes saw a 4-2 lead slip away when H’crest scored four times in the fifth.

The loss – along with a steady drizzle that fell during most of the contest – spoiled 8th Grade Night for Union City, which fell to 6-5 with the defeat in its final home game of the season.

Kennedi Robinson went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Alli Kate Frilling drove in two tallies and crossed the pay station twice. Edie Rodgers tripled and had two RBI and Sarah Beth Byars scored two times.

Frilling was charged with the pitching loss, though four of the Lady Cougars’ runs were unearned due to errors.

UC will play at Ridgemont on Thursday and will close out its 2020 campaign Monday with a road game at Martin.
