Union City, Tenn.–Union City Schools have benefitted from the kindness and generosity of several businesses and groups as they cope with the challenges of beginning the 2020-21 school year.

Representatives from Atmos Energy made a stop in Union City Thursday to deliver backpacks, insulated meal pouches and water bottles to be used by students in need.

Atmos Operations Supervisor (Ky-Mid States Division) Bobby Brown and company employee Robert Murphy met with UC Schools Director of Teaching and Learning Rene Flood to drop off the supplies.

Atmos made similar donations to Kentucky school systems in Mayfield, Graves County and Paducah.

Second Baptist Church in Union City recently donated purple lanyards to hold masks in place to Union City Elementary and UC Middle School students.

The lanyards are designed to keep the children’s masks around their necks and close at hand for added convenience during the school day.

School personnel handed out the lanyards to students after they were delivered to the board office by a church representative.

All Union City School students will receive free breakfast and free lunch for the remainder of the first semester of the 2020-21 school year.

Director of Food Services Nan Tilghman said students would also receive meals for the weekend at no charge on the last school day of each week.

The service will also apply to those who are involved in Distance Learning at each UC Schools campus.

Union City will return to a more-traditional schedule on Monday, PreK-6th grade attending in-person classes five days a week on their respective campuses and Grades 7-12 going to class four days a week with Fridays reserved for Distance Learning and tutoring.

Details of the plan can be found at tornadotouch.net.
