The Tennessee Association FFA announced that former OCCHS FFA member Tanner Nichols from Ridgely was selected as a regional finalist for the Tennessee FFA Proficiency Awards in Fiber and Oil Crop Production. Nichols was one of only three selected to compete at the state finals set to be held at the 92nd Tennessee FFA Convention & Expo in Gatlinburg this past spring. Due to Coivd-19, the convention was moved to a virtual format where Nichols was given top honors in his proficiency area.
Nichols currently works for Nichols Farms & Seed, a 3,600 acre corn, soybean, and wheat operation. He is the son of David and Ginger Nichols of Ridgely. A graduate of Obion County Central High School, Nichols immediately went to work on the family farm and has increased his responsibilities in the operation. Nichols main responsibilities on the family farm include running a combine during harvest, collecting and analyzing yield data, preparing chemical and fertilizer plans, and service and repair equipment.
The proficiency awards recognize outstanding student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. The Fiber and Oil Crop Production award is one of 47 proficiency program areas FFA members can participate in to develop valuable experience and leadership skills at the local, state and national levels. Descriptions of each proficiency award area are available at ffa.org/participate/awards/proficiencies/
Nichols, a member of the Obion County Central FFA Chapter, became eligible for the state award after being selected as one of three state finalists during the 2020 Tennessee FFA State Finalist Selection Process in February.
This award is supported by Tennessee Soybean Council.
