A pair of Martin Methodist Men’s Golf team members –one from South Fulton–were recently recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America as Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars.
Justin Johns and Gary Glassman achieved the honor thanks to their strong play on the course and success in the classroom. The duo becomes the second and third RedHawks to ever achieve the GCAA’s highest honor, joining former teammate and 2019 graduate Eli Marty.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 78.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his institution.
Johns, a South Fulton, Tennessee native, was one of the premier players in the 2019-2020 season for the RedHawks. Johns finished the year ranked in the Top 150 nationally on GolfStat rankings. The highlight of Johns season came in early March, when he won the BMC Golf Classic. Johns was also named First Team All-Conference by the Southern States Athletic Conference.
Glassman, a Madison, Alabama, native, flourished in his first season with the RedHawks after arriving from Jefferson State Community College. Glassman posted a yearlong average score of 77.59, improving in nearly every tournament throughout the season.
“I am thrilled for this prestigious award for Justin and Gary,” RedHawks head coach Tim King said. “They are two tremendous young men and terrific ambassadors for Martin Methodist College. It was awesome to go out and watch them compete at such a high level, both on the course and in the classroom. I hate their seasons were cut short, because I feel like they were really just hitting their stride. I look forward to seeing what they can do during their senior campaigns.”
