Paris, Tenn.–Henry County Mayor Brent Greer announced Monday night that he intends to retire effective on or before November 3. Greer has served as County Mayor for 22 years and said his decision followed ‘thoughtful consideration and meaningful prayers.’
Greer made the surprise announcement at Monday’s regular board of commissioners meeting. He informed staff earlier in the day.
Greer said the timing of his announcement will allow the office of the mayor to be placed on the November ballot to ensure the voters have the opportunity to elect a successor and also to allow the commission to determine if they wish for him to serve until the election or whether they prefer to name an interim successor to serve until the November election.
He said he is aware of ‘very qualified individuals’ who have indicated they are planning to pursue the position once it is vacant. Greer said he believes these individuals are passionate in their desire to serve the citizens of Henry County.
Once retired, Greer said he will be dedicating more time to his wife and family, noting that he still enjoys excellent health and wishes to be a bigger part of his family’s life.
Greer said, “It has been a tremendous honor and privilege’ to serve the citizens of Henry County for the past 22 years. He noted he has been blessed with a wonderful staff, excellent and dedicated board of commissioners, an outstanding group of officials and employees over the years.
“I stand at the ready at the will of the commission” to do everything in his power to assure and smooth and seamless transition, he said, and personally thanked the citizens of Henry County for allowing him the privilege ‘to serve them and this wonderful community.’
