Motorists are urged to be on alert as Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews and contract crews start another round of mowing along U.S. Highways and state highways across the KYTC District 1 region.
Mowers are already at work in some counties. Others will ramp up mowing activities over about the next week as weather allows.
Mowing zones will be marked by appropriate signage and should be treated with the same respect and caution as other work zones. Drivers are urged to be alert for slow-moving tractors and support vehicles that may be required to travel into and across travel lanes from time to time as they go about their work.
This tentative mowing schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions and other factors:
- Contract mowers have started in Livingston County along KY 453 and U.S. 60, also mowing secondary state routes connected to these highways. Crew is working through Livingston County toward Crittenden County.
- Contractors started in Lyon County on U.S.62, progressing toward Eddyville from Lake City. A portion of this crew will continue through Lyon County toward Trigg County while the rest mow into Crittenden County over the next week.
- Estimated time of Smithland Section (Crittenden, Livingston, Lyon) project completion is about 2 weeks, weather permitting.
- Murray Section (Calloway, Marshall, Trigg) mowing is scheduled to begin around July 20th.
- State crews are working other counties in District 1
- I-24 mowing will be scheduled in a few weeks as weather allows
After roadside mowing is completed, contract and KYTC crews will be making herbicide applications to the right-of-way to control Johnsongrass and broadleaf weed growth.
As a reminder, political signs and other advertising are not allowed along state right-of-way and should be removed. Yard signs and other signs create both an obstacle and a safety hazard for mowing crews and motorists. Signs will be removed from right-of-way by state or contract personnel as required.
KYTC District 1 is responsible for 2835 miles of highway in Trigg, Lyon, Crittenden, Livingston, Marshall, Calloway, Graves, McCracken, Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, and Fulton counties.
