McKenzie, Tenn.–Carroll Lake will reopen to the public Saturday, April 4, but due to the COVID-19 crisis, there will be no ceremonies or activities planned.

Carroll Lake has been closed since 2014 when heavy rains and flooding destroyed the floodgates. The lake was emptied while the gates were repaired and a lengthy process of defoliation and excavation began. Invasive vegetation was sprayed with herbicide, dead vegetation was burned away.

The sluice gate was repaired and closed, but failed and more repairs were made so they could begin refilling the lake in January 2017. The first batch of fish (bluegill and redear sunfish) were released into the lake later that same year. TWRA has also been stocking the lake with largemouth bass, catfish and walleye.

TWRA Regional Fisheries Manager Tim Broadbent said the lake will be open seven days a week from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Daily fishing permits are $6 and can be paid in a box located near the new boat ramp. Annual permits are offered. The bait shop that stood on site for many years was torn down after it was determined it contained asbestos.
