Dresden, Tenn.–Weakley County Mayor Jake Bynum has released a statement stating that the State Department of Health’s listing of Weakley County has having a confirmed case of COVID-19 is due to a clerical error.
Officials are saying that a resident of Carroll County actually was confirmed with COVID-19, but because the test was administered in Weakley County, it was listed as a Weakley County case.
In his statement, Bynum said, “At 3 PM today, the Tennessee Department of Health released the confirmed count of COVID-19 cases across the State of Tennessee. Those numbers not only reflected an increase in the total cases in the state, but stated that Weakley County had its first confirmed case. While I have no doubt that COVID-19 will eventually make its way to Weakley County, as of 3/23/20 our community still does not have confirmed case.
“We have been advised by the Director of the Weakley County Health Department that the inclusion of Weakley County was clerical error. A resident of a neighboring county tested positive from a test administered at the Weakley County Health Department. When a clerk at the regional health department input the information, they did not realize the community was located in a county outside of the location where the test was performed.
“Again, while I am sure that we will eventually see COVID-19 in our community, today is not that day. Let this false alarm be the reminder to each one of us to #StayCalmStayinPrayerStayWellStayHome #TogetherApartinWeakley
