Union City, Tenn.–“Green Eggs and Ham” were on the menu Wednesday at Union City Elementary School. And it got a five-star rating!

Students in Kim Taylor’s Pre-K class enjoyed the Dr. Seuss classic, then ate true green eggs and ham prepared by educational assistant Barbara Brooks as part of the Read Across American program celebrated by UC Schools.

While a couple of students were initially skeptical, the meal got a “thumbs up” from all after they sampled the cuisine.

The birthday of Dr. Seuss is being celebrated all week at UCES with a particular theme each day.

Numerous guest readers have visited the campus, including school administrators, high school student-athletes and club members. There have been numerous others from outside the UC Schools family to also volunteer their time.

And they’ve read from the classics, including “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” (Monday) and “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” (Tuesday). Thursday, students will hear “Fox in Socks,” with “The Cat in the Hat” rounding out the week on Friday.

On Monday, students were encouraged to dress up in attire of what they hope to be when they grow up or a college shirt in conjunction with the “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” story. Tuesday, many wore red or blue to keep with the “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” theme.

Today was Wacky Wednesday, with a good many students wearing wacky or mismatched clothes and shoes — some of the attire worn backwards or inside-out.

The “Fox in Socks” story Thursday will obviously encourage students and staff to wear crazy or fun socks, while hats of all fashion will be on display Friday to accompany the “Cat in the Hat” story.

Guest readers will continue to visit the school Thursday and Friday.
