Union City, Tenn.–The Union City Middle School baseball team got off to a good start Tuesday.
The Tornadoes – in just their second season — triumphed in their season opener and made first-year head coach Bill Kail a winner in his Purple and Gold debut with an 8-3 win at Trinity Christian Academy.
UC broke a two-all tie in the fourth and then put up a four-spot in the sixth to secure the victory.
Kyler Southerland went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and knocked in a run to pace the Twisters. Barrett Cox and Will Ragsdale each had a hit, an RBI and scored, while Skylar Hall singled and drove in a run.
Maddox Dunn and Kirben Thompson contributed to the winning cause as both scored one run and knocked in another.
Hall was credited with the pitching win, going 3 1/3 innings and recording five strikeouts. Ragsdale got the save, giving up just one unearned run in 2 2/3 innings.
UCMS will play at Crockett County Thursday at 4 and will then host TCA Friday in a make-up of Monday’s postponement, at 4 p.m. at Thompson Field in Graham Park.
