By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Enrichment students at Union City Elementary School have been soaking up the knowledge the last couple of days.

First- and second-grade classes taught by Tammy Harris listened intently to guest speaker Sherri Hanna, executive director of local E-911, as she explained the importance of severe weather preparedness.

Students had recently completed study on a weather unit and heard about safety tips, how to heed the cautions of warnings and learned how to determine the proximity of approaching storms from the span between lightning and thunder. Mrs. Hanna also explained how they could be storm chasers in the future.

The classes peppered her with many good in-depth questions and relayed several of their individual thoughts and experiences.

The two classes then received take-home materials from local 911 center training officer Carol Easley and trainee Kristin Phillips, who also also participated in the sessions.

Students have a field trip planned to the E-911 office in the near future.
