Savannah, Tenn.–With landslides continuing, Hardin County Highway Department officials have decided to permanently close at least one section of Glendale Road near Savannah.

Two homes collapsed into the Tennessee River over the weekend, with other buildings sliding down the bluff and on Monday, new deep fissures appeared on the roadway itself.

“We’re never going to be able to reopen this section, it’s just too dangerous. It’s not a matter of fixing it – it’s going to have to be moved completely,” Hardin County Highway Department Superintendent Steve Cromwell said Monday afternoon.

A fissure that was only two inches wide began appearing Monday morning but by the afternoon was a deep fissure down the center of Glendale Road. The slide also took down power lines.

Officials said concrete blocks will be used to permanently block access and plans are to construct another roadway away from the landslide site.
