Union City, Tenn.–The preliminaries are over.

Meaningful basketball begins Monday night for teams in District 13A and the postseason bracket is officially set for all teams involved.

Coaches from the league met Wednesday to finalize plans for the upcoming tournament, which will again include first-round elimination games at satellite sites in both girls’ and boys’ play before the event moves to UT Martin’s Skyhawk Arena for the semifinals, championships and consolation games.

The Union City boys – having won the 40th district title in the illustrious history of the program that claims five state championships – will be the top seed in the seven-team field.

A perk of the regular season title is a first-round bye into the semis and an automatic spot into the region tournament for the Tornadoes. UC will enter postseason play with a record of 18-10 or 17-11, depending on the outcome of its regular season finale Friday night at Class 3A Dyer County.

The Twisters will face the winner of the South Fulton-Dresden game in the first of two boys’ semifinals Friday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at UTM. The survivor of that contest will play in the tourney finals at Martin on Monday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m.

Union City’s girls, 18-9 heading into its final pre-tournament game Friday at Newbern, are the second seed.

The Lady Tornadoes will host Lake County Monday night at 6:30 in a do-or-die contest, the winner earning a spot in the semifinals and at least two more games, including a regional tourney spot.

The girls’ semis are set for next Thursday (Feb. 20) at 6 and 7:30 p.m., with UC – if it advances – playing in the second of those contests at UTM. The girls’ consolation and championship games are slated for Saturday night, Feb. 22, at 6 and 7:30.

The top four finishers on both the girls’ and boys’ side will advance to regional play, currently set to be hosted by Gibson County High School.
