Paris, Tenn.–– The late Patsy Thompson was one of Henry County Medical Center’s most active volunteers and the staff at the Center for Wellness and Rehab wanted to honor her and give back to the organization she dearly loved, the HCMC Volunteer Auxiliary. Together, the staff members have made contributions that totaled $350 to be used towards the scholarships that are awarded each spring by the Auxiliary.
Over the years, Thompson volunteered in various locations throughout Henry County Medical Center and donated over 6,500 hours of her time. She is greatly missed.
Thompson assisted in the clinic with various needs of the therapists; having equipment ready, helping prepare areas for patient care and office work they needed at the time.
Most importantly, Thompson was always encouraging patients, especially pediatric patients. Thompson had a way to make the most anxious patient feel at ease by discussing her experiences or simply sitting by the patient. Earlier this year, Thompson unexpectedly passed away, leaving the staff heartbroken.
Each year the Volunteer Auxiliary awards a scholarship to a student who is continuing their education in the medical field. The contributions the center made in honor of Patsy Thompson will provide more financial assistance to individuals who will one day provide care to others.
“Contributing to the Auxiliary’s scholarship fund seemed the most appropriate way we could honor Patsy,” said Debbie Jelks, Director of Rehabilitation Services. “Patsy loved to talk about ‘her kids’ from her years as librarian of the W.G. Rhea Public Library. So when they came back to Paris and were working in the medical field, she was always extra proud.”
The Volunteer Auxiliary at Henry County Medical Center is comprised of nearly 50 volunteers that serve across the organization. Auxiliary volunteers offer their time, talent and dedication throughout the hospital in patient care and clerical settings. Our volunteers come from unique backgrounds and share the common interest in helping others.
