Weakley Co. Law Enforcement Takes 60 Kids On Christmas Shopping Trip

Dresden, Tenn.–Members of the law enforcement community of Weakley County took 60 less fortunate children Christmas shopping Thursday night at the Wal-Mart store in Martin. Sheriff’s Captain Randall McGowan said the names of the children were supplied by the school district and Department of Children’s Services. Each child was given $100 that they could use on clothes and toys. Deputies, along with officers from the police departments in Martin, Dresden, Greenfield, Gleason and Sharon participated, as did members of the Department of Children’s Services. Each child was also given a Bible by the sheriff’s office and the First Baptist Church of Martin provided a new pillow and gift bag containing assorted items. The money used for the shopping trip was raised during a golf tournament held earlier at the Persimmon Hills Golf Course.  McGowan said the law enforcement community thanks all of the businesses which sponsored holes in the golf tournament along with the people who played in the tournament. He said several people who happened to be in the store during the shopping trip also gave money to the officers to cover costs. The event is named “Shop With Sheriff Smith and Justice” after a children’s book published by Sheriff’s Investigator Eric Smith.
