Obion, Tenn.–Legendary Obion County Central High School Basketball Coach Jimmy Whitby passed away early this morning. He was 75.Whitby died at AHC in Union City Manor and Rehab.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at White-Ranson Funeral Home with Cannon Whitby officiating. Burial will be in East View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until the hour of services on Sunday.
Pallbearers will be Chucky Reedy, Spencer Hoffman, Terry Moore, Fritz Fussell, Ryan Dyer, Robin Cude, Matt Harris, Bill Kail and Blake Cannon Whitby.
Honorary pallbearers will be all former players and managers.
Coach Whitby led Obion County Central boys to a state championship. School officials said, “We would like to extend our sympathy and condolences to the Whitby family at this time.”
Coach James Ezell “Jimmy” Whitby was born June 22, 1944 in Huntingdon, TN. to Charles Wesley Whitby and the late Samuel Rebecca “Sammie” (Lippard) Whitby. He married the late Georgianne Cunningham June 1999. She died June 26, 2009.
He is survived by his father, Charles Wesley Whitby of Union City; one daughter, Heather Lansaw of Union City; two sons, Charles Clark “Cannon” (Shari) Whitby of Collierville, Denver Whitby of Union City; four grandchildren, Chelsea Nichole Laster of Union City, Rebecca Grace Laster of Union City, Madison (Jacob) Richburg of Plainview, TX., Blake Cannon Whitby of Collierville; two great-grandchildren Karston Purcell and Keaton Purcell both of Union City; an expected great-grandson Charles Allen Richburg; one brother, Bobby (Jean) Whitby of Union City.
He is preceded in death by his nephew, Eric Whitby.
