Henry Co. School Teachers Granted Tenure

Paris, Tenn.—At a busy meeting of the Henry County Schools board of education Thursday night, 11 teachers were granted tenure, the board approved a request to apply for a grant for a tornado safe space at the high school, and board members donated a wheelchair to the local TARP Center.
A reception for the tenured teachers was held just prior to last night’s meeting. They are:
Henry County High School: Callie Blount, Renae Lassiter, Sandi McCartney, Jessica Pryor and Bobby Ellis.
Harrelson School: Holly Thompson, April Scarbrough.
Henry School” Chari Fleener.
Lakewood School: Morgan Bruce, Riley Nance and Marcie Burkhart.
–Board approval on the grant for the tornado safe space was by a 4-1 vote, with Board Member Rod Frey casting the lone negative vote. He explained that he approved of the idea of a tornado safe space for the high school but was voting no to the contractor that would be attached to the grant.
District Maintenance Supervisor John Akers presented a report on the grant for the tornado safe space and said it is available now if the board applies. The safe space would hold all of the high school’s students and staff.
Akers also presented an update on the ongoing building projects around the system, noting that the front office at the high school is nearing completion.
–The board donated a personalized wheelchair to the TARP Center. The wheelchair had been purchased originally for a student in the special education program and has not been used since that student was graduated.
–Updates were presented on the Patriot XL programs and the district’s after-school programs recognized Director of Schools Dr. Leah Watkins as part of the UTrust grant Staff Recognition program.
PatriotXL made a gnome craft and Christmas ornament for her, which were presented by Holly Mason of the Grove Patriot XL program. A food pantry donation also will be made in her name from Kids’ Corner.
–The board recognized Patriot Pride Christmas Card winner Madeline MCCarty. Her Christmas Card design was chosen to be on the district’s cards sent out this year.
