Paris, Tenn.–Henry County Mayor Brent Greer and the family of the late Sonny Melton have announced that a dedication ceremony to name a stretch of highway between Paris and Big Sandy after Melton will be held at 2 p.m. Friday.
The “Sonny Melton Memorial Highway” will be officially dedicated at the intersection of Hwy. 218 and Hwy. 69A near J.B.’s Express Mart.
The Henry County and Benton County Commissioners asked the state of Tennessee to name the highway in Melton’s honor on October 2017. The dedication honors Melton, who was originally from Big Sandy and was killed in the Las Vegas mass shooting.
The proclamation approved by the Henry County Commissioners said: “The Henry County and Big Sandy communities mourn the loss of Sonny Melton and wish to honor and preserve his memory, and whereas, in memory of the life of Sonny Melton and in honor of his heroism, the Henry County Board of Commissioners recommends that the portion of State Highway 69A S between the Paris bypass (State Hwy. 218) and Big Sandy” be renamed the Sonny Melton Memorial Highway.
The resolution was recommended by Commissioner David Webb.
Last month, the new bridge on Lower Big Sandy Road was named the “Sonny Melton Memorial Bridge” at a ceremony.
