Union City, Tenn.–The Union City Police Department has been made aware of a phone scam that has been used against the local community.
The scam consists of the caller telling the victim that he is an officer with the Union City Police Department and that they are currently wanted for crimes in another state. The caller then gives information as to how money should be sent to stop the warrant from being served.
Police officials said this is not a new type of scam, but it is the first time the Union City agency and one of its officer’s name has been used to make the call look legitimate. “We rarely call to tell someone they have warrants. If we did make such a call, it would have been to someone we have already had contact with due to an ongoing investigation. Please do not fall for this type of phone scam,” they said.
