Union City, Tenn.–Fifth-grade math students at Union City Middle School “put the pencil” to the cost of preparing a Thanksgiving meal.
It proved to be a learning process on more than one level.
As part of practicing multiplying and adding decimals, members of Emily Cross’ classes were given the project of planning a Thanksgiving dinner for their families.
Students “shopped” for all the items needed to prepare the meal by researching the E.W. James store sales ad. They then calculated the total cost of purchasing those items, using their multiplication skills and putting decimals in the proper places.
As a for-instance, if a turkey was on sale for 79 cents a pound, students had to figure the cost of a 12-pound bird and add that to their meal cost.
“They (students) enjoyed finding the different items in the circular, and I think they were really surprised at how much it cost to prepare one meal for a family at Thanksgiving,” Cross smiled.
Union City Schools students will dismiss today for the Thanksgiving break, to return to classes on Monday, Dec. 2.
