UCES Collects 8,884 Food Items For Needy

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Union City Elementary School students did their part to ensure nobody will go hungry over the holidays.

Through its “Turkey Trot” project the last couple of weeks, UCES collected an amazing 8,884 food items that included many canned goods to be divided equally among Chimes for Charity and the Obion County Ministerial Association.

The two charitable organizations picked up the goods at the school late last week and will use them to feed and distribute to the less fortunate over Thanksgiving and Christmas.

UC Elementary School physical education teachers Bill Kail, Mason Storey and Antawn Coby and longtime PE instructor Tammy Harris coordinated the “Turkey Trot,” which gave students extra incentive during regular class activity.

Students ran or walked laps at both War Memorial Stadium or the UCES gymnasium when the weather was inclement, counting each lap and then getting sponsors to donate specific numbers of cans/food items per-lap.

“The excitement in their eyes and on their faces when they reported their laps and how many cans that represented was priceless,” Kail said. “It was truly a win-win situation with them helping others and working hard in PE.”

Students in Sara Brown’s kindergarten group brought in 456 items to win class competition between pre-K, kindergarten and first-grade classes.

Grades 2, 3 and 4 also competed in another category, and both Laura Nipp’s and Clarissa Youngblood’s classes brought in 505 items each to tie for the most.

The three winning classes will be rewarded with a pizza party this week.

Dan Huggins represented the Obion County Ministerial Association in the canned goods pick-up, while members of the Union City Jaycees retrieved cans for Chimes for Charity.
