Paris, Tenn.—At a special meeting Wednesday morning, the Paris City Commission took the first steps toward locating a four-story Hampton Inn on Mineral Wells Avenue on property near the Hwy. 218 bypass.
Based on recommendation last week of the planning commission, city officials approved first reading on rezoning parcels adjacent to the Paris Nissan dealership as PB (planned business), which will accommodate most retail businesses. Second reading is set for December 5 at the city commission’s regular meeting.
Several other meetings are set for December 5, at which other entities will be acting on the project: the Paris Industrial Development Board will conduct a public hearing at 3 p.m., with the Henry Co. Commission to meet at 4 p.m.
Current owner of the vacant parcel is Fred Morris. Developer for the prospective project is VRL Hotels LLC, which seeks to construct the new Hampton Inn on the property.
The property is currently zoned both P-M (Planned Industrial) and SC-1 (Shopping Center). The newly created property would be designated under one zoning.
City and county officials said the project calls for a new Inn with 72 rooms, swimming pool, meeting room and business center.
County and city officials have been concerned with losing the Paris Landing Inn until the new Lodge At Paris Landing can be completed in 2021.
Hampton previously operated a hotel on E. Wood Street in Paris, which was replaced by Quality Inn, and many were upset by the closure because the Hampton chain offers valuable reward points.
City and county officials have said that many business people who travel in and out of Henry County have been staying at Murray because of the Hampton Inn closure in Paris and that the county also has been affected adversely by fishermen and their families coming to Kentucky Lake and finding other venues for their overnight stays.
In other business during Wednesday’s meeting, the city approved first reading
for a minor subdivision plat submitted by Dharmesh Patel and Henry Farmer’s COOP. Patel has acquired an additional .77 acre tract currently zoned M-1 (Light Industrial) that has now been combined with his existing .52 acre tract B-1 (Highway Commercial). When combining these two properties it left the newly formed parcel under two separate zoning designations. The Planning Commission recommended this newly created tract be zoned B-1 (Highway Commercial).
Patel already is constructing a convenience store/gas station on that location and reportedly plans to locate the diesel pumps at the additional tract.
The rezoning request is up for first reading with second reading and public hearing included on the December 5, 2019 meeting of the City Commission.
