Local Podiatrist Appointed To TSSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee

Paris, Tenn.–Local Podiatrist Dr. David Long was recently appointed to the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA).
The committee is made up of Tennessee health professionals who provide TSSAA’s Executive Staff and Board of Control with important insight. “We review and promote changes to high school athletics involving health and safety,” said Long, a provider with West Tennessee Bone and Joint Clinic (WTBJC).
Dr. Long sees patients in Paris, Martin and Union City.
As both a physician and a football official, Long offers perspectives from the medical side, as well as the officials’ side of the discussion.  “I am particularly interested in the TSSAA’s heat illness and concussion policies. This research is ever-changing, and I am staying current on studies and applications as they evolve,” he said.
Long has been impressed with the committee thus far, noting that the TSSAA wants and respects input on their proposed rule changes and policies. “They have done an excellent job appointing members from several different areas of medicine, as well as school administrators.  The athletes’ health and well-being are of the utmost importance to the committee,” he said.
A board-certified, podiatric surgeon, Dr. Long has specialized in treating problems of the foot and ankle for more than three decades. He is a fellow of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, a long-time member of the Tennessee Podiatric Medical Association and a fellow of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.
