Paris, Tenn. – Work is progressing rapidly on the Splash Pad project at the Eiffel Tower Park and City Manager Kim Foster noted at Thursday night’s meeting of the Paris City Commission that five local vendors are working on the project.
Foster said with dirt work complete, construction has begun. Water lines are being located and footers will be poured for the bathroom and filter buildings by the end of November so that the local Parks and Recreation Department staff can work on construction of those buildings throughout the winter.
The last of the original projects with the Economic and Community Development Façade grant is about to begin with improvements coming to the exterior of Fletcher’s Dental on N. Poplar St. Foster said other projects in the offing include more upgrades to the front of the Paris 5&10. The building owners had originally planned to install an awning, but now are wanting to make other upgrades including to the door. Foster said that request will go before the committee.
In other business:
–The commission granted Mayor Carlton Gerrell authority to sign a certificate of compliance allowing the Dollar Store at 1517 N. Market St. in Paris to sell wine. The action involves only that Dollar Store but plans are for all of the Dollar Stores to eventually sell wine, too.
–The commission referred a request for a right of way acquisition to the planning commission. Norman Feageans has purchased the property located at 10 Fairgrounds Rd. (formerly the Hungry Wolf) and is interested in acquiring right of way adjacent to the property where there now is a dead-end.
–The commission approved the bid for $1,537,487 from Barsto Construction for the Jones Bend Sewer Replacement project. The bid was the low bid received. Paris Board of Public Utilities General Manager Terry Wimberley said Rural Development requires a resolution from the city. The BPU board and staff already approved the bid. The bid also was thoroughly evaluated by Jacobs Engineering, Wimberley said.
