Schools In Henry Co. System Offer "Second Chance" Breakfasts

Paris, Tenn.–Schools in the Henry County Schools system know how to support their middle school learners by providing a “second chance” breakfast every day. So far, Lakewood Middle, Grove, and Henry County High School serve the “second chance” breakfasts.
The efficient design feeds over half of each classroom and has helped over 79% of their overall student population to eat breakfast either in the first line or the second chance breakfast programs. All students can eat free in one of the breakfast programs and can also eat both programs.
Ashley Shults, Tennessee Department of Education, voiced her approval of the breakfast expansion. “The cafeteria workers called every student by their name and there is a real relationship between them and the students,” she said. “Teachers say that they worked together to schedule the best time for the second chance breakfast and that students no longer complain about being hungry.”
Henry County School System offers free breakfast in every school. Second chance breakfast is served at Lakewood Middle, Grove, and Henry County High Schools. Karen Wilson, Nutrition Supervisor, wrote and received a breakfast expansion grant for the schools to implement the programs.
