Semis Overturned, Barge Loose, Highway Shut Down In Benton, Humphreys Counties

By Shannon McFarlin News Director
Benton County, Tenn.–Straight line winds overturned approximately seven to nine semis on 1-40  in Benton and Humphreys Counties and a barge has gotten lose and is close to hitting the Tennessee River Bridge.
Benton Co. Sheriff Kenny Christopher told WENK/WTPR around 6:15 p.m. Saturday that both sides of the 1-40 at the bridge will be shut down once that happens. “I figure it will hit the bridge in about 45 minutes,” he said.
All but one of the semis have been put back on their wheels, he said. Multiple agencies have responded to the accident scene, which is around Exit 126 in the area of Birdsong, Christopher said.
“We had 40 eastbound shut down and 40 westbound down to one lane,” Christopher said, “but with the situation with the barge, we’ll be shutting down both sides in a few minutes.”
Anyone trying to travel to Nashville tonight needs to go on Route 70, Christopher said.
