Griffey Introduces "Constitutional Carry" Bill

Nashville, Tenn.–Tennessee State Representative Bruce Griffey (R-Paris) has introduced a “Constitutional Carry” bill (House Bill 1553) to be heard in the upcoming legislative session, which begins in January.
The term “Constitutional Carry” (also known as “permitless carry”) refers to the legal carrying of a handgun, either openly or concealed, without a permit.  Griffey’s bill was drafted by the Tennessee Firearms Association and is supported by a number of other organizations that advocate for 2nd Amendment rights.   If passed, Tennessee would become the 17th state to be a “Constitutional Carry” state.
Earlier this year, Kentucky passed a “Constitutional Carry” bill in the House by a 60-37 vote and in the Senate by a vote of 29-8, and it was signed by Governor Bevin in March.
“Tennessee is surrounded by a number of Constitutional Carry states, including Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri  in addition to Kentucky, and I want Tennessee to join these other pro-gun states in eliminating the tax on an individual’s ability to exercise his/her 2nd Amendment Constitutional right,”  Griffey said.  “Not only would my Constitutional Carry bill restore gun rights to honest, law-abiding citizens by repealing the fees and burdens imposed on our natural, constitutional right to bear arms while in public, but I believe it would actually make Tennessee a safer state.  The top 3 safest states in the country based upon property crime and violent crime are all  Constitutional Carry states – Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire – and 5 of the top 10 safest states are Constitutional Carry states.”
The proposed “Constitutional Carry” law would not affect prohibited person laws or any law that governs the misuse of a firearm, he said.
