UCES Wing Named In Honor Of Wilkinson

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Vicki Wilkinson gave a considerable amount of her professional life to Union City Schools.

Monday night, the school system gave back to Mrs. Wilkinson.

The pre-K and special education wing at UC Elementary School was named in honor of the longtime system employee, who retired after 35 years at the end of the 2018 fall semester.

The announcement — much to the surprise of Mrs. Wilkinson — was made by Union City Director of Schools Wes Kennedy. He was accompanied by Rene Flood, director of Teaching and Learning; Laney Rogers, director of Special Populations; and Assistant Director of Schools Michael Paul Miller.

Several of Mrs. Wilkinson’s retired teaching cohorts were also present for the ceremony.

A plaque in her honor will be prominently displayed in the pre-K/special ed hallway at UCES.

“Union City Schools were important to Mrs. Wilkinson. She, in turn, was and is important to us at Union City Schools,” Kennedy said. “We, as a school system, believed this was a fitting tribute to her.”

Mrs. Wilkinson served as UCSS Classroom Curriculum coordinator from 2006 until her retirement. During that time, she evaluated and mentored teachers as they met state education requirements while also serving as a “motherly” figure to many.

Before that, she served as a special education teacher in the system and later added technology to her duties before then championing the still-growing Pre-K cause at Union City Elementary School.

Mrs. Flood, too, believed the honor was fitting for Wilkinson.

“She was a longtime faithful employee of Union City Schools, and she had a big heart for special education students,” Mrs. Flood said. “She also had great passion for our pre-K program, which continues to grow, and she molded so many good teachers with her fair evaluations and her curriculums.

“Vicki will always be ‘one of us’ at Union City Schools.”
